Why “People First” Still Builds the Strongest Foundations

At P+F Construction, “People First” has been more than a tagline since day one—it’s the lens the team uses to make decisions in the field, in the office, and in the communities we serve.

Over the past five years, P+F has grown from a two-person startup to a team of more than 20 professionals and recently relocated to a new 15,000-square-foot headquarters in Fountain Inn. Through that growth, one thing hasn’t changed: a belief that the most durable foundations are built on people, not concrete and steel.

Co-founders Steve Foushee, VP of Project Management, and Will Prescott, VP of Field Operations, recently reflected on how “People First” continues to shape safety, client partnerships, and the way P+F approaches every job.

People First: More Than a Motto

When P+F launched in 2020, Steve and Will brought decades of experience leading complex projects across the Southeast. But they also brought a conviction that construction could be done differently—by putting people at the center of every decision.

“We started P+F because we saw that the projects we were proudest of weren’t just the biggest or most complicated,” said Steve. “They were the ones where the team felt valued, our trade partners were respected, and the client walked away saying, ‘We want to work with you again.’ That’s what People First means to us.”

From early feasibility studies to final punch lists, the team’s goal is not only to deliver a quality building, but to build people—internally, among trade partners, and within the communities where we work.

Safety as the First Expression of People First

In construction, “People First” starts with safety. For Will and his field operations team, safety isn’t a checklist or a compliance exercise—it’s the most tangible way to show that people matter more than schedules or budgets.

“If we say People First, the first place that shows up has to be safety,” said Will. “Every person who steps onto one of our jobs has a family counting on them to come home. No milestone, no deadline, no budget is worth compromising that.”

On P+F job sites, People First shows up in practical ways:

  • Pre-task planning and clear communication before work begins
  • Empowering anyone to pause work if conditions aren’t right
  • Partnering with trade contractors to align on safety expectations from day one
  • Using the new headquarters for training sessions and toolbox talks that include both internal staff and trade partners

By treating safety as a shared responsibility—and not just a set of rules—P+F works to create job sites where people feel respected, heard and protected.

Client Partnerships Built on Trust, Not Transactions

People First also shapes how P+F engages with clients. The team has delivered projects ranging from church campuses and higher education facilities to historic rehabilitations and new commercial developments across the Upstate.

Across these markets, the mindset remains the same: listen first, then build.

“Clients don’t call us just because they need a building,” Steve said. “They’re trusting us with something that’s strategic for their business, their congregation, their campus, or their community. Our job is to understand what success looks like for them—then build a team and a plan around that.”

For P+F, People First in client relationships looks like:

  • Being honest and transparent about scope, cost and schedule
  • Engaging early in preconstruction to help clients make informed decisions
  • Maintaining consistent, accessible communication—from weekly meetings to day-to-day updates
  • Saying “no” when it matters, if a shortcut or rushed decision would risk quality, safety or long-term performance
  • A willingness to admit that P+F strives for continuous improvements. When we mess up, we’ll admit it.

That approach has helped P+F earn repeat work and establish long-term relationships with owners, developers and community institutions who value collaboration as much as craftsmanship.

Trade Partners as an Extension of the Team

A People First culture doesn’t stop at P+F’s internal team—it extends to the trade partners who bring each project to life.

“We don’t see our trades as vendors,” said Will. “They’re an extension of our team. When we plan well, communicate clearly and treat them with respect, everyone performs better—and the client feels the difference.”

That philosophy shapes how P+F:

  • Involves key trades early in preconstruction and budgeting
  • Works hard to provide clear schedules and realistic expectations
  • Strives to support an environment where field crews are treated with professionalism on site
  • Prioritizes long-term trade relationships over one-time, low-bid choices when possible

By focusing on long-term partnerships instead of short-term wins, P+F aims to create jobsites where everyone—from superintendent to subcontractor—feels invested in the project’s success.

Investing in the Next Generation

People First also guides P+F’s commitment to the next generation of builders. From involvement at Clemson University’s Construction Science and Management program and LaunchGVL in partnership with the Greenville Chamber and Greenville County Schools, to mentoring emerging professionals inside the firm, Steve and Will see leadership as a responsibility to invest in others.

“None of us got here alone,” Steve reflected. “We were shaped by mentors who gave us opportunities, told us the truth and trusted us with responsibility before we felt ready. Now it’s our turn to do that for the next generation.”

The new Fountain Inn headquarters has been intentionally designed to support training, collaboration and growth—from conference spaces where the team can host design and coordination meetings, to areas dedicated to staff development and trade partner training.

For Will, that investment is deeply personal:

“Some of the best days in this business are when you see a young superintendent or project engineer grow in confidence,” he said. “When we give people room to learn, hold them accountable and support them along the way, everyone benefits.”

Looking Ahead: Staying Grounded as We Grow

As P+F looks toward its next chapter after five years of steady growth, the leadership team is clear about what must remain constant.

“We’re proud of the projects we’ve delivered and the milestones we’ve reached,” Steve said. “But if we ever lose sight of People First—if the work becomes more important than the people doing it—then we’ve missed the point.”

Will agrees that the future will be defined not just by what P+F builds, but by how they build it.

“Five, ten, fifteen years from now, we want folks to look back and say, ‘They were consistent. They did what they said they would do. They took care of people,’” he shared. “If we can keep doing that, the rest will take care of itself.”

A Final Word to Our Partners

As 2025 winds down, P+F’s leadership is quick to point back to the people who made this year—and the first five years—possible:

  • The teammates who bring their best to the field and the office
  • The trade partners who show up, problem-solve, and deliver quality work
  • The clients who trust P+F with projects that matter to their mission
The communities across Upstate South Carolina and beyond that welcome P+F onto their campuses, main streets and neighborhoods

“People First isn’t a slogan we hang on the wall,” Will said. “It’s our daily commitment—to each other, to our partners, and to every project we touch.”

For owners, developers, and community leaders planning projects in 2026 and beyond, P+F welcomes the opportunity to demonstrate what People First looks like in practice—on your site, with your team, and in your community.
